Happy Hour at TBC: Recap
First off, Boston Cream Muffins are awesome. This relevant because they were bought on the way there.
Also, thank you to Mel for getting me a card signed by Tristan.
I've learned a few more things, and this is good, though I wish a few I had figured out BEFORE the show.
I had way too much on my plate. This wasn't intentional, but was poor planning on my part (and an attempt to fill in a gap made by an act not ready). I should have pushed more of the MC bit on my co-host. The good news is that Heaven Lee Ginger has been convincing her man that he should do more with us, which means occasional performances and helping with MC (he did our sound tonight which was also useful). That will help me in the long run.
We simply need more performers. Its not that we are all not capable of putting on several acts in a show, its that there isn't necessarily time for the costume changes required. This isn't a new learning, but is very much reinforced.
We also need more filler material. Next full show we're using Heidi von Dutch's stupid human trick in addition to Miseph's. We especially need it since we need to replace or put aside some of our simple 'filler' numbers.
Also, I am never using spirit gum as pastie glue again, I don't care if it came w/ pasties as a recommended glue. Ignoring initial difficulties in getting the pasties to stay on, and then the glue that remains on the pasties, getting of my breasts was ridiculous. Possibly dressing room quote of the night "My boobs are still tacky!"
For the show itself, I don't think the audience realized how crazy things were for us backstage (yay) and I think they quite enjoyed it.
The line up:
Gay Pimp - This was almost a filler intro piece. I will probably not do it again only because some days I am very very on the choreography, other days I waffle and my performance isn't so good. I'm not happy with my performance of this piece, though I looked awesome. Actually I looked like a total douche-bag prep that doesn't realize he's hiding something.
Poker Face - Margarita had a slight costume malfunction that bothered her, but I doubt any of the audience cared. We didn't care watching from the side. This piece is proof of why choreography matters and that its not what you take off but how. It was going over amazing before boobs were involved. I want to use this act again, possibly seeing if I can convince some modifications for use at retro-futuristic conventions.
La Bush Resistance - Tommie has performed this song a number of times, and it's always great to watch. Very sexy and flirty bellydance with a sword. It is also one that takes good advantage of her long figure.
Dick in a Box - Once again, somewhat of a filler so the ladies had changing time. This act isn't too complex, but perhaps needs to be retired for now, or revamped with a partner, not sure. But I always love it when I open the box near the audience.
Sirens of the Sea - We had decided before that we'll be giving this one a break after this show. Always cute.
Part of Your World - Well, not really, but that's the kereoke song playing. Heaven Lee Ginger sang this one, with a very mermaid tail. We'll need to use this again.
Come up and try my new parts - I didn't get to see this one at all, but it was Heidi von Dutch's first performance with us, I think it went over well. It was a short song with simple choreography that we fleshed out with ways of drawing attention to oneself.
Glove interlude - I made a bit of a mess up here on the order. I had put Patricia before hand but forgot and wasn't ready anyway and other stuff. Miseph covered my ass wonderfully on this one by adding more stall material. But his glove interlude is quite hilarious.
Patricia the Stripper - Return of a favorite for a few. I had the worst time with pasties beforehand in getting them to STAY on. In that madness I forgot to wipe my facial hair off, hopefully it didn't take away from the act. Fun act to do, needs to be put on hiatus.
Faster Kill Pussycat - Awesome as always, but clearance is always going to be an issue. We do communicate our space needs when asked... but there is usually some quirk. For this show it was before hand all the chairs had to be moved so the room orientation was different... and a chandelier that fell within the diagonal of Margarita's clearance requirements. This one will probably be packed away because Margarita likes to switch up songs for flag.
One Way - I was thinking that we had used this one enough that it needed to be retired. Unfortunately for that line of thinking the act really just keeps getting better. So we're going to have to be careful where/when we use it, but it is going to have to be kept around.
Why Don't You Do Right? - My performance at Haven was better. I also wasn't happy with my makeup for the act because I simply didn't give myself enough time to do it right (or put on lashes). Hopefully I didn't have liquid eyeliner still on the white of my eye when the act started. Also I switched pasties between acts. I love doing fan dances. I think I'm going to do my next one to a different song, for which I have a few ideas. This song can always be a pull out song.
There may or may not be video to this show. Hopefully photographs will filter through back to us.
